What Causes Swollen Feet and Ankles?

While swollen feet are a common problem we see here at My FootDr, it is also quite concerning for many patients – and frustrating when the only shoes you can fit are those ratty sandals you should have thrown out years ago.

Alongside the swelling, you’ll likely also be feeling discomfort or tenderness when walking or standing, and your skin may appear discoloured and tight. While foot and ankle swelling is most common in pregnant women and the elderly, it affects young adults too, and may even be a sign of an underlying problem that needs further investigation to rule out serious causes.

Let’s get into some of the reasons why your body is retaining too much water in your lower limbs and causing swelling, and what you can do to help.

“The pain just started and now I’m changing the way I walk so I don’t step on it, and I think the muscles in my legs are getting sore because of it”

“It hurts so much to put any pressure on it. It’s been a week – I thought it would’ve got better by now, but it’s just as bad as when the pain started, maybe worse”

Turf Toe Causes & Symptoms

Simply put, a turf toe is a sprained big toe. It gets the name turf toe because many of these injuries are sustained on artificial turf, like during games of rugby, hockey, sprints and the like.

If you have a turf toe, you’ll have a painful and tender big toe joint at the ball of your foot, with likely swelling and bruising. The pain will be exacerbated if you move your toe upwards, which you may not be able to do as the swelling in the joint will likely restrict your movement. You’ll also likely be limping, as bearing weight and applying pressure to the big toe joint will be painful.

Os Trigonum Syndrome is a big cause of pain at the back of the ankle that we see particularly in those that are active in sports or activities that have you repetitively pointing your toes downwards. It stems from the presence of an extra (accessory) bone, approximately the size of a small pebble, right behind the ankle joint. While only a small number of people are born with this accessory bone, it can be a large source of pain and discomfort for those affected, and you won’t know that you have it until you start experiencing pain and symptoms at the back of one or both heels.

Impingement Symptoms & Causes

If you’re experiencing pain at one of the joints in your lower limbs like your ankle, or between two bones, particularly when you perform a certain movement like pointing your foot upwards or downwards, impingement is a possible cause of the problem.

Impingement is a general term meaning to encroach on or limit something – and in podiatry, when there are limitations on a structure or tissue in the lower limbs, it means more pressure on it and hence the start of painful or uncomfortable symptoms.
