Our Able Motion certified podiatrists have undertaken further training and have a special interest in managing complex cases. These include patients with complex deformities, post-trauma or neurological rehabilitation, paediatric concerns and hypermobility.

An important part of this, is the prescription and fitting of custom-made, medical-grade footwear. We can custom make medical-grade footwear for problems such as diabetic Charcot’s foot, bunions, arthritic foot deformity, foot ulcers, amputations and many more. Specific measurements and 3D scans are taken of the feet and lower legs to prescribe these custom medical devices

An Ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) is a custom-made brace that supports the foot and ankle.

We take a 3D scan of each individual to map their foot, ankle and leg. The AFO is designed and 3D-printed using a choice of materials, selected for their durability, weight and suitability for the patient. These AFO’s are prescribed to contend with a variety of problems, which may include muscle weakness, joint instability, arthritis and high muscle tone. AFO’s help to increase mobility and independence, assist rehabilitation, and/or to reduce pain. Depending on our patient’s needs, the AFO may be hinged (able to bend at the ankle), spring loaded (assists with movement) or solid (to restrict movement).

The Surestep Supra-Malleolar Orthosis (SMO) has revolutionised orthotic management for children with hypotonia. Through the use of extremely thin, flexible thermoplastic, the Surestep SMO compresses the soft tissues of the foot, stabilising children while still allowing for natural development. Our podiatrists use the SMO to help stabilise the foot and improve movement.

Footwear modifications suit patients with structural deformities that wish to remain in readily available footwear. Each modification is carefully selected to improve our patient’s comfort by alleviating the burden caused by their deformities.

An example of such would be a full length raise to accommodate a large leg length discrepancy. Additional modifications offered could include: re-lasting the shoes to increase width, reinforcing the side of the shoe with a buttress or a flare to provide greater stability to the foot, or changing the shape of the sole to create a rocker bottom effect, a natural gait pattern.
